On 26 January 2015 Australian Computer Society (ACS) Fellow and Honorary Life Member Professor Peter Juliff AM was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia in the General Division on the 2015 Australia Day Honours list.
An ACS member since 1971, Professor Juliff was recognised for his significant service to information technology as a pioneer educator, and through professional organisations. He joined the Victorian Branch Executive Committee in 1975, and served as the Chairman of ACS Victoria in 1978, 1983-1984 and 1993, and as Vice-Chairman in 1977, 1981-1982. Professor Juliff was awarded a Fellow of ACS in 1984, the Peter Murton award for 20 years’ service to the Branch in 1994 and Honorary Life Membership in 1999.
Professor Juliff was the Chairman of IFIP Working Group 3.4 on Professional and Vocational Education, reporting to UNESCO and also a member of a three-man IFIP committee for international standards for IT qualifications, Baltimore USA in 1998. He was also a member of the Management Committee for the Computer Industry Training Program administered by the ACS and Commonwealth Education Department. In 2001, he was awarded the IFIP Silver Core for services to International IT.
After 10 years in the Victorian Public Service culminating as a Public Service Inspector (EDP), Professor Juliff’s academic career began in 1967 at what was then Caulfield Technical College and became Caulfield Institute of Technology. One of the highlights of this period was the involvement with the Commonwealth Government’s Programmer in Training scheme which was introduced in 1971. In 1980 he was appointed Head of the new Department of Electronic Data Processing at Prahran College of Advanced Education. 1990 saw him move back to CIT, renamed Chisholm, and join Monash University as Head of Department of Software Development. In 1993 he became the Foundation Professor and Head of School of Management Information Systems at Deakin University and retired as Deakin’s inaugural Emeritus Professor in 1999. In this span of more than 30 years he had been involved in the introduction of Computer Science as a Victorian Year 12 subject, conducted training courses for the Singapore National Productivity Board and the Chinese iron and steel industry and some of the residents of Melbourne’s Pentridge Prison.
To this day, Professor Juliff continues his work with ACS through assessing applications under the Commonwealth Government’s Skilled Migration Scheme and has recently completed his 50,000th assessment over the past 16 years.
