ACS wishes to acknowledge the passing of the Hon Dr Mal Bryce which was announced on 3 March 2018. He was 74.

Mal Bryce was a champion of the Australian ICT industry since the late 1970s.

A former Deputy Premier and Minister for Industry and Technology in Western Australia, Bryce’s career also included roles as a company director, corporate manager and senior consultant.

Bryce’s achievements include establishing Australia’s first government Department of Computing and Information Technology, the WA Technology Park in Bentley, the SciTech Discovery Centre and the Small Business Development Corporation.

In the 1990s he was a leading pioneer in the development of the Australian internet industry and its application to business, government agencies and communities.

He was awarded the Pearcey Medal in 2012, and recognised as a leading figure in Australian ICT by ACS in its computing history book, A Vision Splendid, to which he contributed.

As part of that project, ACS recorded an aural history with Mal Bryce, which is available from the National Library in Canberra.
