Tech companies and businesses with large tech workforces have dominated a list of the best places to work at to grow your career.
LinkedIn has released its eighth annual list of the top 25 companies for career growth in Australia, based on its own data and stats around career progression, such as the number of employees getting promoted and how many are adding new skills.
The list is dominated by tech companies scoring nine spots in the top 25, while the list also includes many tech-adjacent companies and businesses with significant tech workforces.
“This year’s honourees are proving that investment in the employee experience is vital in today’s employment landscape – whether it’s launching upskilling initiatives to accelerate employees’ artificial intelligence proficiency or offering flexible working arrangements,” the LinkedIn report said.
“These are the companies leading the way not only in attracting workers, but retaining them in our ever-changing world of work.”
The highest-ranked tech firm on the list is Google parent company Alphabet, which came in at number six.
The most common jobs listed on LinkedIn for Alphabet are software engineering, site reliability engineer, and account manager while its largest job functions are engineering, IT, and media and communications.
Homegrown companies
Australian tech giant Atlassian scored seventh spot on the list, with notable listed skills at the company including mobile app development, human computer interaction, and web development.
Atlassian has emphasised remote work following the COVID pandemic and now allows all of its employees to work from wherever they want, a move it says has saved its workers 10 days per year in commuting time.
This was the second year running that Atlassian placed highly on this list.
Another leading Australian tech firm placed highly on the list, with Canva coming in at number nine, the first time it has made it to the list.
According to LinkedIn data, the most notable skills at Canva are mobile application development, human computer interaction and artificial intelligence, while the most common job functions are software engineering, front-end development and product design consultant.
Global tech giant Adobe was named the tenth best workplace in Australia for career growth.
Adobe vice-president and managing director of Australia and New Zealand Katrina Troughton said the company was honoured to be included.
“We believe that our people are our most important asset, and they should be given every opportunity to unlock their full potential,” Troughton said.
“With that in mind, we strive to make Adobe the best place for our people to learn, grow their careers and make an impact.”
Other tech companies included in the list were SAP at 12th, ServiceNow at 15th, ResMed at 16th and Medtronic at 22nd.
Amazon also came in at 19th, a significant drop after being listed fourth in last year’s iteration.
Australia’s big four banks placed highly on the list, with the Commonwealth Bank taking out the top spot, thanks in part to more than 90 per cent of its listed jobs being hybrid.
NAB placed second on the list, while the other major banks also placed highly.
Large telecommunications firms and superannuation funds were also highly rated when it comes to the career progression for their employees.
A number of other similar lists have found that tech companies are great places to work in terms of employee progression and wellbeing.
The 2023 Great Place to Work list found that Cisco was the best place in Australia to work when it came to large companies, while Atlassian came in at third. Adobe was listed as the best medium-sized business to work at in the country.
The Top Employers Institute’s ranking of the best workplaces in 2023 included five tech companies: HCLTech, Infosys, WiPro Limited, Tata Consultancy Services and UST Global.
